There are two issues at to deal with. First, if female circumcision is done under proper medical conditions, then it has far less risk attached to it than most legal cosmetic operations performed in the West on women. So why outlaw it in the West? Surely the first strategy should be harm reduction to those affected? (The current strategy just forces it underground). Second, the one of consent – should a parent be able to chose for a child – this surely applies to male circumcision too – which is routinely done in the U.S?
Thanks for your reply. I agree that male circumcision is also barbaric, but far less so than female circumcision. Male and female circumcision should not be allowed on children who are not of a legally consenting age. Female circumcision, unlike male circumcision, aims to control a woman’s sexuality. Forcing of others into submission is oppression and a violation of basic human rights. It is wrong, as we should not seek to control others but only ourselves, and it should cease.
